The Capilano University Blues faced a tough test on Saturday, falling 92-44 to the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners in a challenging matchup at home. The Mariners set the tone early and maintained control throughout, building a lead as large as 48 points in the fourth quarter.
For the Blues, the night was defined by struggles on both ends of the floor. Offensively, Capilano shot just 25.0% from the field (16-for-64), including 15.4% from beyond the arc (4-for-26). Despite a few bright moments, such as Lauren Tomlinson’s three three-pointers en route to a team-high nine points, the Blues were unable to find a consistent rhythm. Barcha Hnizdilova contributed six points and a team-leading five assists, while Mia Parkin added eight points on an efficient 4-for-6 shooting.
Rebounding was another key issue for Capilano, as they were outmatched on the boards 50-27. The Mariners capitalized on their dominance, scoring 20 second-chance points compared to the Blues’ five. VIU’s bench also proved to be a significant factor, contributing 45 points compared to Capilano’s 10.
Turnovers further compounded Capilano’s difficulties, as they committed 21 compared to VIU’s 14. The Mariners turned those miscues into 21 points, while the Blues managed only 11 points off turnovers. Despite these struggles, Capilano showed flashes of defensive effort, recording nine steals, including three from Hnizdilova.
Capilano’s best stretch came early in the first quarter when they briefly held a one-point lead. However, the Mariners quickly responded, closing the quarter with a double-digit advantage and never looking back. By halftime, the Blues trailed 48-21, and the deficit only grew as the Mariners continued their relentless pace in the second half.
Looking ahead, the Blues will aim to regroup as they prepare to face the Camosun College Chargers next weekend in Victoria, BC. With opportunities to improve on both ends of the court, Capilano will focus on rebounding, ball security, and offensive efficiency in hopes of bouncing back from Saturday’s loss.
