Alanah Dulong scored both games and Megan Thitchener couldn't be beaten as the Capilano Blues pulled off a weekend sweep on the road at the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners.
Saturday's game was scoreless at halftime but early in the second half, after Aynsley Hurtado forced a turnover inside the Mariners area, Mya Fraser stepped into a bouncing ball with her left foot and deposited it just inside the near post.
Fraser's goal proved to be all the offence the Blues would need but, after a VIU handball in the area late in the second half, Dulong converted a penalty kick to make for a 2-0 final score.
On Sunday, Dulong scored her league-leading seventh goal of the year on a beautiful volley in the 24th minute and it stood up as the deciding goal in a 1-0 win.
Thitchener was sharp when called upon, making a key save in the seventh minute when some pressure by VIU created a scoring chance for Mariners leading scorer Jami Hartwich. The Blues keeper was nimble again late in the first half when she needed to tip a drive from VIU's Hannah Rose over the bar. The back-to-back shutouts give Thitchener four on the season.
With a six-point weekend, Capilano is now 6-1-3 on the season and in first place in the PACWEST. The schedule has the Blues at home twice on the final weekend of the season. On Saturday, Oct. 21, CapU plays host to the second-place Douglas College Royals in a 1 p.m. start. The season finale will see the Langara College Falcons come to CapU to for a Noon start on Sunday, Oct. 22.
Just a single point earned on the weekend will give the Blues first place and a bye into the finals of the PACWEST provincials.
