Showing impressive resolve, the Capilano Blues overcame a 12-point late-third-quarter deficit to earn an 88-84 overtime win against the visiting Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats Friday at CapU's Centre for Sport and Wellness.
First-year guard Arshya Ghasemi was huge for the Blues in the second half where he scored 12 points before adding seven in overtime. The 6-foot-5 West Vancouver native ended up with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting while grabbing four rebounds.
CapU lost centre Zach Klim with just over three minutes left in the game as he picked up a foul and technical on a defensive possession. The Blues turned to second-year forward Josh Vandevelde to fill the void and he gave them just what they needed, grabbing three of his six offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and overtime, keeping Blues possessions alive. He also went for a season-high 13 points in addition to his nine total boards.
The Blues helped themselves with a perfect 6-for-6 showing from the free-throw line in overtime to help seal the win which evens their record at 5-5.
On Thursday, CBC held the Blues to just 27 points in the second half on their way to an 89-67 win.
Klim had a big night for the Blues with 25 points on 10-of-13 shooting. The 6-foot-11 big man also grabbed eight boards and handed out a pair of assists.
Kash Lang and also scored in double digits for the Blues but the team got to the free throw line just 10 times and was only 6-of-23 from three-point range.
CBC got balanced scoring, led by Damein Coleman Jr. who had 14 and also recorded three blocks.
Capilano has one more weekend of PACWEST play before the exam and holiday break. They host Camosun College Dec. 1 and 2; the Friday game is an 8 p.m. start while tip off Saturday goes at 3 p.m.
