The Capilano Blues played solid basketball for all but one quarter at Columbia Bible College (CBC) in a Feb. 16-17 road trip and that one sluggish frame cost them a chance to complete a weekend sweep.
Capilano struggled to score the ball in the opening quarter of Saturday's game and found themselves down 22-8 after 10 minutes. They'd go on to lose 83-78 in overtime after a convincing 72-59 victory on Friday night.
The Blues shot 3-of-19 in the first quarter Saturday with single buckets from only Ahmad Athman, Zach Klim, Suraj Gahir with a three and a free throw from Josh Vandevelde. CBC got scoring from every starter Saturday plus some off the bench to get a healthy double-digit lead early.
Kash Lang got things going for CapU in the second quarter with eight points while Gahir grabbed five of his 10 boards on the night The Blues would outscore CBC in each of the remaining frames to erase the Bearcats lead. Lang set the stage for overtime with a layup to tie it at 72 with seven seconds left but in the extra session, CBC's Cam Carter took over with eight of his 21 points on the night to lead the Bearcats to the win.
On Friday, CapU used a dominant second half to overcome a five-point deficit at halftime to secure the win. Athman, Lang and Russell Curley had multiple makes in the third quarter and the Blues held the Bearcats to just seven points. A tidy fourth quarter sealed the win with Gahir hitting a couple of threes as part of a 15-point night for him.
Capilano is now 11-11 on the season and tied with Langara for fourth in the PACWEST standings. The Blues are at second-place Camosun to finish the weekend Feb. 24 and 25 while Langara hosts first-place Vancouver Island University.
The PACWEST provincials are Feb. 29 to Mar. 2 at Okanagan College. The top-six teams make the playoffs with the No. 1 and 2 seeds getting a bye to the semifinals.
