A big statement from the Capilano Blues in the first 10 minutes of the game set the tone for the remainder of the contest as they never trailed on their way to a 76-64 win over the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats in the PACWEST provincials quarter-final Thursday in Kelowna.
The win puts CapU into the Friday night semifinals where they will face the No. 1 seed, the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners.
On Thursday, Suraj Gahir got the Blues an immediate lift with a three in the first minute of the game. The teams traded buckets over the first five minutes and CBC drew even with a Spencer Dododza and-one but Capilano's Josh Vandevelde promptly replied with a pair of buckets and when Russell Curley made a jumper and a three in consecutive possessions, the Blues were up 11 in the final minute of the first and never looked back.
Capilano increased their lead to 15 at halftime as Tristan Keah-Tigh hit a pair of second-quarter triples on his way to a season-best 11 points coming off the bench.
The Blues managed to keep CBC at arm's length over the final 20 minutes to bring home the win. Kash Lang was named Blues player of the game, finishing with a game-high 19 points. CapU's bench played a key role, contributing 32 points with 11 from both Keah-Tigh and Curley. Vandevelde had eight in 10 minutes of action.
Capilano plays the feature Friday night semifinal, an 8 p.m. tipoff against the Mariners. The winner will book a spot in the gold-medal game and to the CCAA national championship as the PACWEST conference has two berths this year.
