If momentum counts for anything heading to the PACWEST playoffs, hopefully it's on the side of the Capilano Blues who turned in an authoritative victory at Camosun College to close out the regular season.
The Blues defeated the Chargers 85-66 Sunday to split the weekend and finish the season at 12-12, which makes them the No. 5 seed at the PACWEST provincials happening this week at Okanagan College. CapU could have finished as high as No. 3 if they'd won both and got some other favourable results around the league. Langara College ended up in third place after they recorded two impressive wins of their own to wrap the season, defeating conference-leading Vancouver Island University twice to finish 13-11.
On Sunday at Camosun, Capilano took control early by building a 14-point lead after the first quarter. Kash Lang and Zach Klim combined for 16 points in the first quarter, the latter also grabbing four rebounds. The Blues increased their lead to 26 at halftime, with Tristan Keah-Tigh hitting two of his three triples in the second quarter on his way to a nine-point, six-assist day.
Ahmad Athman hit both threes he tried in the fourth quarter and got eight of his 10 points in the final frame as the Blues cruised to the win.
In Saturday's opener, CapU dropped a 64-63 result, the third time this season Camosun beat the Blues by a single point. An ineffective fourth quarter cost Capilano as they led by seven going to the final frame but made just four buckets over the final 10 minutes while the Chargers' Jesse Vogel, who was scoreless to that point, got 11 on 5-of-5 shooting including a three to spearhead the comeback.
The Blues' 12-12 record is the same as Columbia Bible College but CBC finishes as the No. 4 team due to their advantage in head-to-head scoring with Capilano this sesason.
Capilano and CBC will face each other on Thursday in the 3 p.m. quarter-final game at the PACWEST provincials, hosted by Okanagan College at Kelowna Christian School.
