While the Capilano Blues may have not won the day on Saturday afternoon, they may have forced the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners to take a later ferry home than they wanted to.
CapU lost the first two sets and it looked like it might be a short contest. But the Blues found their form and forced the Mariners all the way to a fifth and deciding set. The final frame to 15 was especially dramatic with VIU squeezing out a win 15-13.
Blues setter Jonah Violini directed the Blues offence expertly and helped Dario Pereira and Marco Kost to 17 kills each while Brendan Zebrynski had 10 and middle blocker Jakob Leinemann registered seven in addition to four blocks.
On Friday, Pereira and Kost had 17 and 13 kills respectively, helping the Capilano Blues extend the opening match of the weekend against VIU but it was not enough as the Mariners took it in four sets.
VIU won the first two sets but CapU stood firm to take the third. The fourth frame was the most competitive of the night and for a time it looked like the Blues might send it to a fifth but VIU was tidier in execution over the final 10 points and claimed the win.
MVB | Final score 3-1 (25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20) as the @VIUMariners defeat the Blues.
