Capilano capped a tense weekend in style on Senior Day as they notched a 1-0 win over the Langara College Falcons that secures top spot in the PACWEST standings and puts them directly into the provincial gold-medal game.
Appropriately, it was a goal from Alanah Dulong - her PACWEST-leading eighth of the season - that delivered the win on Sunday. Capilano had the bulk of the play all afternoon but just failed to click in their finish. Langara keeper Mackenzie Main was busy in the first half as the Blues swarmed the Falcons goal area but couldn't crack the code. Aynsley Hurtado appeared to have scored late in the first half but the play was whistled offside.
Late in the second half, just after Blues coach Dennis Kindel had substituted Jessika Thaler into the match, the graduating fifth year helped get the ball up the field to Maya Smith who made a gorgeous cross that Dulong volleyed home for the only goal of the game. It was the only goal of the weekend for the Blues who entered the final two games needing just a point to guarantee themselves first place but they were blanked in Saturday's game against the Douglas College Royals.
Sunday's dramatic win was further punctuated by the postgame ceremony to honour graduating players Alanah Dulong, Aynsley Hurtado, Catrina Olstrom, Mya Fraser, Julia Peyton and Jessika Thaler.
In Saturday's game against the Royals, CapU was bested in a 2-0 final. Once again, the Blues generated several opportunities to score but couldn't connect when it counted.
The PACWEST provincials are happening Oct. 28 and 29 at Vancouver Island University (VIU) in Nanaimo. As top seed, the Blues are automatically in the gold-medal game and they will await the winner of the VIU-Douglas semifinal game which goes on the Saturday. The championship final will be Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2:30 p.m. on the Nanaimo District Secondary turf field.
