Sebastian Cirotto's brace, the first two goals of his Capilano Blues career, wound up being all the goals scored on the weekend as CapU tied the Douglas College Royals 2-2 at Lillooet Park Saturday before falling 3-0 at Douglas on Sunday.
In the weekend finale at the Royals' home park, CapU conceded near the 20-minute mark but, short a few bodies due to injury, they didn't have much left in the tank at the end of the weekend. They stayed close until Douglas got goals in the 73rd and 76th minutes, the latter a long volley strike from Yianni Siafakas.
On Saturday at home, Capilano erased a pair of Royals leads and finished even at two apiece. At the time, it gave CapU points in two of their first three games.
Behrad Hajimohammadi opened the scoring for Douglas early in the first half with a stunning volley strike to the top of the net that drew a huge reaction from the Royals bench, who swarmed the goalscorer in near the corner flag.
Cirotto brought CapU back level with a tidy finish after beating a Douglas defender on a long ball, the result of some good work by Alex Lopez who created a turnover in midfield. Cirotto's first made it a 1-1 score at halftime.
In the second half, Ben Beaulieu restored the Douglas lead but it wouldn't last long with Cirotto finding the back of the net again. The rookie forward corralled a corner kick from Tommy Millar and quickly got a shot away that beat the Douglas keeper inside the near post.
Douglas pushed to the final whistle and had a good look in the dying seconds but weren't able to convert.
Brandon Lecce again stood tall in the Capilano net, keeping the Blues in the contest as the last line of defence. Riley Marshall was unlucky not to score in the 14th minute as he headed a corner kick from Millar off the crossbar, the second time in as many weekends he's found the woodwork off a Millar corner.
