For Russell Curley, the hoop must have looked huge.
The Blues second-year forward made shots from all over the court during a weekend set at Okanagan College (OC) that saw Capilano drop the opener 81-77 before bouncing back for a decisive 94-59 win in the second game.
Curley hit five threes in both games and shot 61 per cent for the weekend. The 6-foot-6 forward drained three from beyond the arc in the first half Saturday as the Blues and Coyotes were tied at 37 at halftime. He hit his fourth and fifth triples in the third quarter but the Blues ran out of fuel in the final frame with OC pulling away for a slim margin of victory.
In addition to his work from three-point range, Curley also grabbed seven rebounds and swiped a steal. Anthony Tamburrino had 13 points and six boards in just 14 minutes of work off the bench Saturday while Kash Lang and Ahmad Athman also scored in double digits.
In Sunday's weekend finale, Capilano was dominant from the opening tip, outscoring OC convincingly each quarter on their way to a 35-point win which was their largest margin of victory this season.
Curley hit all five of his threes on Sunday in the first half, helping CapU to a 16-point lead going to the break. He'd finish with 19 and six rebounds. Zach Klim also started strong Sunday with 10 points in the first quarter on perfect shooting from the field and free throw line. He'd finish with 17 to go along with three rebounds and three steals.
Blues head coach Alex Van Samang was able to use the depth of his bench with comfortable leads throughout the game. Veteran big man Scott Watson hit a three and got to the charity stripe where he was flawless for the game. Watson finished with a career-high 11 points while rookie forward Carter McCauley hit a pair of triples and scored eight points while grabbing three boards.
Capilano returns home Nov. 23 and 24 for games against Columbia Bible College. Both games are 8 p.m. starts at CapU's Centre for Sport and Wellness.
