The Capilano Blues Men's volleyball team showed their depth and promise despite losing to the Chargers Saturday afternoon (23-25, 16-25 and 23-25). It was an important weekend for the Blues, who entered Saturday's rematch against the Camosun Chargers looking to build on Friday night's big win. After dropping their season opener to Douglas two weekends prior, the Blues were eager to keep their momentum going and continue proving that this year's group is capable of more.
The past few seasons have been challenging for the Blues, having missed the PACWEST playoffs in recent years. However, there's a fresh sense of optimism surrounding the team this season, boosted by several new additions and the return of key contributors. Having veteran Reese Nowotny back from injury is a major boost, as he brings consistency and experience after missing most of last season. Returning outside hitter Xavier Masztak also continues to be a crucial presence for the Blues both on and off the court.
The first set was a tightly contested battle that saw Camosun nearly edge out the Blues on a controversial call by the official. Unfortunately, the second set slipped away from the Blues as the Chargers capitalized on a few scoring runs through their building momentum. The Blues regrouped in the third set, showing lots of energy and confidence despite being down two sets, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Shub Wander stood out for Capilano, delivering key kills and aces while showing impressive poise and maturity for the young team. He recorded 8 kills and 2 aces. Second-year outside hitter Masztak stood out once again, recording 6 kills and 1 block. Luke Tiegen, who is new to the Blues this season but has some experience being in his third year of eligibility, also showed up big today with 6 kills, 2 blocks and 1 ace.
Even in defeat, the Blues displayed encouraging signs of growth and depth that haven't been seen in past seasons. With a roster made up largely of first and second-year players, the team showed confidence and versatility. They were able to make substitutions throughout the game that showed the rising depth of the program. There's a clear sense of belief and renewed energy within the group, and as they continue to develop chemistry, the pieces are in place for a strong push this season.
The Blues will look to regroup as they play the third-ranked Vancouver Island University Mariners, who have a 3-3 record.
Come out and support your Blues next Friday, November 14, at 8 p.m. against the Mariners.
