Kirsten Abo's dramatic buzzer-beating three sent the Capilano Blues to overtime Saturday against the visiting Camosun College Chargers and the Blues made good in OT on their way to a 78-72 victory to close out the first half of the season.
Camosun took a four-point lead to the fourth quarter but CapU's Barcha Hnizdilova helped erase that with seven of her 14 on the night in the final frame. The Chargers were nursing a slim lead into the game's final possession and went up three on a pair of made free throws by Sevene Grewal. The Blues got the ball back with 7.4 seconds to go and went the length of the floor, getting the ball into Abo's hands with just a couple ticks remaining and the veteran guard did the rest, shaking the Camosun defender and arching a three that found the bottom of the mesh as time expired, sendig the proceedings to overtime.
In the extra session, each of the Blues players scored the ball including Teigan Manson, who made three of her nine free throws in OT. They held Camosun to just two buckets and two free throws to seal the win and reach the midway point of the schedule with a 9-3 record.
On Friday, CapU overcame a first-quarter shooting slump to come back for a 62-57 win over the Chargers.
CapU shot just 3-for-18 in the opening frame and saw the Chargers go on a 19-1 run to close out the quarter with a 23-8 advantage. The Blues began to turn the tables in the second with Abo taking the bulk of the looks and scoring eight points and helping Capilano to within five at halftime.
The teams traded buckets in the third and the Chargers maintained the five-point lead. In the fourth, the Blues held Camosun to just nine points while scoring 19 themselves, 10 from Abo who posted a game-high 21 and five from Sereena Hothi who ended up with 12 for the second straight game.
The weekend saw the return to the Blues lineup of Jenna Griffin who had been out since November 2023 with a knee injury.
Capilano is now off for the exam and holiday break. Their next games are Jan. 12 and 13, 2024 at Langara College.
